On film, a double exposure is not a trick of editing. It is two exposures of light falling on one frame, one after another, adding together. Where the first picture is bright it has spent the emulsion, and the second cannot register. Where the first is dark the emulsion is still open, and the second pours in. A bright sky burns through. A shadow becomes a canvas. The photographer commits to both frames before either is developed, and the result is made by light, not assembled afterward. It is the oldest in-camera effect there is, and it has never stopped being beautiful, because the combination is physical.
Digital let it slip. The double exposure survived as a menu item and a blend mode, but the thing itself, two moments of light sharing one surface, was never answered. Part of what was lost is the light. Two exposures add, and the brightness of one pours into the shadow of the other. But light is also color, and color is the larger half of the story. When a red neon falls across a blue evening sky, the red is genuinely added wherever the blue left it room. The two colors mix, the way two dyes mix in one emulsion. That is the part a layer cannot fake. You can lay a red picture over a blue one. You cannot make them share the light.
Doublet takes two RAW files you have already shot and adds them where film adds them, in light. Photons to photons, before the picture is built, while each frame is still the raw mosaic of values the sensor recorded. Doublet sums the two and writes the result as a new RAW. Not a blended JPEG, a real raw negative, mosaic intact, that you can still develop, grade, white balance, and recover like any frame off the sensor. It behaves like film because it is doing what film does: accumulating light on one frame.
This is harder than laying one picture over another, which is why almost nobody does it. To add two RAW files honestly you cannot touch the finished images. You open each raw negative, decode the sensor's mosaic, add the two in the same linear light the sensor measured, then rebuild a valid raw negative around the result. It is the difference between painting over a photograph and re-exposing the negative. This is not a new idea. It is an old one that only Nikon ever shipped. From the mid-2000s you could take two RAW files inside a Nikon, add their sensor data with adjustable weight, and get a new RAW back. Nikon put it everywhere, flagships and entry-level bodies alike, across the whole DSLR era. Then the RAW output went away. The mirrorless Z cameras dropped it in 2018 and saved the result as a JPEG. The last DSLRs followed in 2020. Every Nikon since saves the overlay as a JPEG, never a RAW. No camera made today will take two RAW files and hand you back a new one.
What the best professional cameras gave up, and what software only ever approximated, Doublet brings to the iPhone. As far as we can find, no other app on iOS combines two RAW files at the level of light and writes a new RAW from them. The blend-mode apps stop at developed color. The desktop tools that come close average their frames for noise and output something flat. Doublet adds, in the raw, on the device, from any two frames you have already shot. It is rare in hardware. It was faked in software. It is, as far as we know, a first on iOS.
