Most cameras meter for the middle. They read the average of the frame and expose so the midtones land where the eye expects them. It is a reasonable default, and it is the wrong one for a raw file.
Here is why it matters. A RAW negative is not symmetric. Shadows hold their information even when they look black, and you can lift them in the edit to find detail waiting. Highlights do not work that way. Once a photosite fills to the top of its well, everything above it is gone, clipped to white, unrecoverable. No slider brings it back, because nothing was recorded. In a raw workflow the highlight is the fragile end of the exposure, and it is the end most cameras protect least.
Highlight Priority Metering inverts the default. It reads the brightest meaningful part of the scene, a bright sky, a window, a face in a spotlight, and exposes to keep it below the ceiling. The highlights survive. The shadows sit lower, exactly where a RAW can carry them, and you lift them later with everything intact. You expose for what you cannot recover, and recover what you exposed for. Available in Settings.
Also in 1.0.8: sharper gallery thumbnail rendering, so an edited photo no longer flashes its unedited state on the way back to the grid, and updated localization across every supported language.
