Dubai, UAE • July XX, 2026 – The Brim Industrial Imaging Bureau today released Monolith™, a 16bit Monochrome RAW engine, in Koloristika 1.3.0, the app's 100th build, on the App Store. Koloristika is a professional camera app that injects color science built for feature films and cinema cameras into your iOS photos at the sensor level - not as a filter laid on top - ensuring maximum fidelity and precision. Monolith™ extends the pipeline to black and white, reconstructing a true monochrome 16bit RAW negative from the sensor up and surpassing the way phones fake black and white from color images.
Developed by color scientist and cinematographer Renato R. Renierra, Koloristika was born of a desire to bring film emulation to your phone through an idealized photochemical system rather than a sampled emulation LUT. The same cinema color science that Renoto’s color science bureau The Brim spent over a decade deploying on feature films, series, and commercials now starts at the sensor of your phone.
In celebration of its 100th update, Koloristika today offers photographers and cinematographers true 16bit Monochrome RAW from sensor data, for the smoothest monochrome a color sensor camera can create.
"Build 100 was a good occasion for something very special. We already gave our users the best color, and now we give them the best monochrome. Monolith really does the harder thing - it rebuilds the frame as a real monochrome negative, from the sensor up. The engineering is the product,” said Renato R. Renierra, founder of The Brim® and Koloristika.
The problem with monochrome from a color sensor is that it’s achieved by subtraction, rather than constuction. The typical desaturation process leaves behind chroma noise and artifacts of the color image, such as the colored speckle that a demosaicer leaves on every edge, resulting in grey fringing. Shadows collapse into gray mottling, creating soft blobs that make converted frames look cheap. Essentially, it drains an image built for a different purpose, with only a thin margin left to push. Monolith flips that and approaches monochrome from a standpoint of reconstruction from the sensor level up.
Beyond functioning as a high-end stills camera with professional color science, Koloristika is a working director's viewfinder and location-scouting tool. Its Scout Mode feature simulates real cinema-lens focal lengths based on actual film-format standards and sensor sizes. Koloristika can be a powerful tool in pre-production and on set in place of a dedicated director's viewfinder to plan and simplify shoots.
Koloristika is built around one idea: every photo keeps its full RAW. Because the RAW image is maintained, you can combine two of them into a new one (the feature “Doublet”); recompose, re-lens, and re-format a shot long after you took it (“Reframe”); or straighten a tilted horizon at capture and undo it later (“Auto Horizon").
