The first computational rangefinder on the App Store, and the first commercially available anywhere. Distance to a far target, with the margin to trust it.
Telemetra™ is out now on the App Store.
Point your iPhone at a distant object, a ridge, a far shore, a building across the valley, and it returns the distance. No laser, no added hardware. Every other rangefinder or measure app is a near-field AR tape measure or a GPS ranging tool. None range an arbitrary far target. Telemetra does, with motion stereo parallax: it reads distance from how the scene shifts as you move the phone. It reports its margin with every reading and never shows a figure it has not earned.
An instrument, not a gadget. The engine is derived from our own live broadcast tracking and stabilization algorithm, which follows a feature frame to frame at sub-pixel precision. We aimed that tracker at distance instead of motion, paired it with a recursive estimator, and let classical geometry do the rest. No neural network, no AI. Passive ranging this way is an open research problem, the one DARPA's CIDAR Challenge funds teams to solve with large learned models, in its final round now. We reached a working result the other way, and the whole app is 1.6 MB.
No LiDAR, so it runs across the iPhone line, not just Pro. Computed in real time, on device, at 60 fps. It holds steady in low light and haze where camera measurement usually fails.
It was made for the whole crew. The set designer sizes a backing without walking a tape across a hot floor. The gaffer reads the throw to the subject before placing a unit. The key grip clears the crane move. The AC reads a focus distance for the setup. The best boy sizes cable and track before pulling them off the truck. The DIT and the VFX supervisor log a real camera-to-subject figure, the number set extension will ask for later. Every one of them is asking the same thing, how far, and none of them has to walk it or guess it now.
Aim at texture for a clean read. A contrasty feature reads fast and tight: brick, bark, signage, a bolt head, the edge of a flag. Aim at blank sky or clean glass and the margin widens to tell you it has nothing to hold. Off the clock the instrument is the same, the ridge on a hike, the far bank across the river, the building at the end of the street. Point, step, read, past two miles, in your pocket.
