Linny for Linear
While developing LinnyVFX we had a clear goal of bringing our SUCOMO3 subtractive color model to a wider audience, all whilst bridging the VFX gap for our existing users of Linny LUTs. After more then a year of development and industry vetting LinnyVFX is finally here. With LinnyVFX you can now easily match linear textured CGI models, plates and other compositing assets with footage shot on Linny LUT supported cinema cameras, and because Linny LUT is such an accurate representation of analog film it can be utilised for matching with material shot on 16mm, 35mm and 65mm motion picture film. For these tasks the kit also includes the regular non print version of Linny LUT for use as a pseudo log base, making Linear-to-Log conversions a breeze, with unprecedented accuracy and depth. Going beyond VFX and motion picture applications, LinnyVFX is suitable for use in photography, game development, and wherever linear material needs a cinematic touch or a starting point for a custom color grade based on our acclaimed SUCOMO™ subtractive color science.
Photography with Cinematic Outcomes
While primarily a VFX tool for look matching linear assets with material already utilizing our Linny LUTs for cinema camera platforms, LinnyVFX LUTs are designed to be applied to any linear material. Therefore they can be used for photographic work to either convert images to log with the included pseudo-log Linny LUT or process images to a cinematic final color output with Linny+Print LUTs. This makes LinnyVFX an ideal solution for pre-production stills, high-resolution compositing plates, and commercial or art photography. Furthermore, for the highest possible performance, when used in photographic applications, the kit includes LinnyVFX in the form of Adobe CameraRaw profiles, which allow LinnyVFX to be used in Adobe Photoshop ACR and Lightroom for processing RAW images.
Not Just Another Inspired Film Emulation
Our range of Linny LUTs for log recording cameras are designed for and extensively used by high-end cinema productions the world over. Since its introduction in 2015, Linny has been used on countless award-winning feature films, commercials, and music videos, establishing itself as the industry-leading solution for analog response emulation. Consequently, with LinnyVFX, photographers now have access to that very same industrial-grade cinematic color science.
LinnyVFX Stress Test
In the before/after demo below, you can see just how capable LinnyVFX can be for linear-to-log conversion. To push it to a technical extreme, we chose a high contrast ratio image, shot on an iPhone 12 Mini in RAW Adobe DNG. LinnyVFX is applied through Adobe Lightroom Mobile. No exposure or color adjustments were made whatsoever, it is an as-shot image. Sharpening, chroma and luma noise reduction is turned off; which is our recommended way of using LinnyVFX with RAW images. Due to the SUCOMO3 subtractive color model, digital chromatic noise does look very organic, so if film emulation is something you are after, use the presets that automatically turn off sharpening, chroma, and luma noise reduction. As you can see on the left image, LinnyVFX base linear-to-log conversion is immaculate and exactly what you would get with a Cineon film scan. On the right, you can see it "printed" with the LinnyVFX + Print B4 pre-mixed FPE applied.
LinnyVFX in Use
Seamless integration across mixed media was a key goal during the development process of LinnyVFX. As a result, the kit was designed to be as universal as possible, to perform perfectly even with none or bare minimum corrections and preparations of the source material before applying the LUT.
* All examples below demonstrate SUCOMO3 LinnyVFX + Print B3 - B4 LUT variants applied to various compressed and RAW digital stills, CGI renders, and composite images with only basic CC modified, and textural grain added. For more examples of color science, visit the main SUCOMO3 page.
